Who are you as a leader (within/beyond/through music education)? Provide a snapshot of you right now as a leader making reference to at least two previous assignment (with links). In what ways have you changed as a leader (within/beyond/through music education) since beginning your time at JMU? Finally, where do you hope to be as a leader by the time you start student teaching? How will you get there? (Please be specific and set goals). The type of leader I am currently at JMU is a silent leader. I never try to cause to much of a scene or talk to much, but rather lead by example. I don't know why I am like this exactly, I've just never have been much of a talker. One assignment that has changed me as a leader is when I had to do a research assignment on a very talented musician George Watsky you can see this post in my weebly post under this. I learned a lot about the importance of all types of genres, I also learned to be more open about other kinds of art, such as poetry, which is closely related to music. George is expressive and open about his ideas, and I believe that I really learned a lot about how to just go with the flow of your music and ideas and they will be outstanding. no matter the field you are in. Another experience that I had in my past that has helped shaped my ideas as a music educator is my work with the makey makey, It helped me develop in my self a more open mind of what can be used in an ensemble. This only being the beginning of a broad spectrum of instruments/devices that could be incorporated into ensembles to make sure that a valid music experience is available to all. For example if you have a student that can not comprehend time or key signature, then you could apply specific notes to the makey makey with a timer on each notes to change to other notes when the chord changes. That way the student can participate and have fun and develop a personal music experience, without being removed from the experiences of being able to play. In todays music society, their are more and more things like thing being made every single day. In fact just the other day I saw an advertisement for this very interesting new music technological device that you wrap around your fingers and you can tap drum beats or play piano and much more, I will link it under this. I will also put a link to my makey makey post where I discus more about my experiences and ideas with the device. Where I hope to be as a leader by the time I start student teaching is, I want to be a very good musician, that way I can help even the best of the best of my students, the ones who want to go to college for music as well. I also want to be a sanctuary for my students and help them become better people then just musicians, I want to see them treat each other with respect and be willing to go out of the way for each other to make everybody feel important and involved and liked in the classroom. I plan to get myself their as a teacher by practicing these things now with the peers I have around me and my friends. A specific goal I have for when I become a teacher is that I want to start a new branch of the program open to all students such as a music and poetry appreciation organization, dance club where we cover various types of music and how you could dance to them (this could be very educational for me as well), these are just 2 examples of endless possibilities that I could create for adding a new branch to the music program at a school.
