The points at the bottom of page 107 have raised an eyebrow to me, I believe I am going to try and be more generally inclusive as a teacher for my classes . I think it is important to have my students build friendly bonds within the first few classes so they can feel the classroom as a more open and friendly atmosphere. I think that I can start each class with some kind of inclusive and helpful game or listening assignment to help my students communicate and make friends.
What I perceive Allsup is really getting at in this chapter when he is describing things such as "a third meaning" and "moving beyond the predetermined" is that we have these same old teacher ways that we do things that we incorporate like for instance our ways of testing and our ways of connecting to students. We need to adapt is what I believe Allsup is suggesting. Our classrooms are much much MUCH different then when they were in the 90s, yet we still run them the same. We have so many more things we can incorporate into our classrooms today that we couldn't even 5 years ago. Its never been easier to get a whole bunch of students together and compose a totally radical drum pattern, or play in your schools SKA band. I know kids don't like band as much as the older generations use to, and I know its because of poor adaptation on our part. Kids want to learn how to make a dubstep sound track or a backing track for a rap album, its time we Include this things in our school, I know I plan on doing that one day when I become a public school educator. Allsups responses to 4 of they key questions based on JMUs work on ethical reasoning. I would first like to talk about Empathy. What would I do if I cared deeply about those involved? Allsup cares deeply about how we run our school education system clearly, but I think he actually cares more specifically about us developing to become the best most diversity teacher we can be so we can provide the upmost heathy atmosphere in the classroom that we can. Fairness, How can I act equitably and balance legitimate interests? Allsup states on page 108 "A culture or social system can maintain a normative order only when it is sufficiently integrated and inclusive, when all have an equal say in the debate about what counts as good or right." This is one of the best examples of fairness I can think of. I can not think of a better example myself of how Allsup represents fairness, we need to have equal say in our debate so we can have the best and truest vision of what is right and what counts as good. Liberty, how does respect for freedom, personal autonomy, or consent apply? I think the quote I previously said represents this well because it also allows us to have a respect for each others opinion. Something I do not enjoy that the school system use to do when I was in school is force us to say the pledge of allegiance. That is not because I hate America or anything of the sort because I love my country, but its because they refer to god in the pledge of allegiance. Anybody who has a different belief is instantly discouraged everyday when they come to school and its all because of one little announcement. I would like to keep my classroom free of any rligios connections to keep from making my students feel attacked everyday in the classroom. Outcomes, What achieves the best short- and long-term outcomes for me and all others? Allsup talks about outcomes in a way where its not about being good at something but seeing progress, as a teacher I think that progress is sometimes all you have at the beginning. Your students might not be happy with where they are personally but I think they sometimes forget learning is a process of small accomplishments till you have a monument of achievement to stand on.
