I will be discussing multiple questions asked by my professor on the first chapter of this book.
8.Describe the five categories of disabilities and describe the label-free approach. (cog- nitive, communication, behavioral and emotional, physical, and sensory). Cognitive, effects the memory and effects their processing of words and writing usually. Communication, this is a learning optical if the student cannot communicate with ease, may it be its a second language to them or they may have trouble pronouncing the words, whatever the case may be. Behavioral or Emotional Challenges, this occurs when the student has a issue with the teacher usually, its usually just because the student doesn't have a good understanding of what may be going on and how the process is working, this causes inappropriate behavior like fighting and being in an unhappy mood or just being aggressive as well. Physical, this is might affect the students academic performance in school, this also might require accommodations for the student to help them succeed as a student in the world, if a student is disabled this will notably create a learning environment for them but also it will help them develop skills to achieve independence. This paper has been a little tough to wright because all my life I've had disabilities and trouble reading and comprehending words, I feel like typing this has helped me better understand myself and my condition and also ways to work around my difficulty reading in my classes. I hope to some day be able to help students in need of assistance as I use to be when I was in high school and middle school and elementary school, I know we all have our ways of learning and I love helping students find those ways, and hopefully I may be able to be the light of my students.

This chapter covers various theories on how to teach your students in todays environment of class. I would like to start with project based learning. Bauer describes this basically as teaching your students through self assessment as in you are assigned a project and you would work from what you do know to discover what you don't know, he describes these as "real world learning environments" and I feel like this is because in my own theory, that you are learning by yourself and you are expanding your mind just by playing around with said program or software whatever it may be. I also see an emphasis on group work a lot in this part of the book, this is because group work is essential to obtaining multiple views on one subject. If we are efficient with our group work then our assignments would be twice as beneficial in the end because we wouldn't only learn something our way, but would learn something in another persons way. These students are also not given specific instructions on how to aproceh because it allows them to think for themselves with the suport of their teachers to guild them in the right direction.
The next main topic covered in this book would be "backwards designed" this is basically starting from the end with the objective in mind as you work backwards through the process and proceed to plan and think about what steps you need to take to be able to start the next task at hand. So this would start with planning learning experience, then it would lead to selecting the evidence needed to prove the student has learned, the last step would be identifying desired student learning results. This would be the backwards process so in though you would actually start from the other end and work your way through. I feel like this process would be applicable when it comes to teaching a class who feels their class is very generic and boring, It interests students to start somewhere then the beginning and to work from another direction, it also would allow my students to think outside the box as apposed to knowing exactly how it works before they start the would need to figure out how the project works before they can start it. Course I would be their for assistance at any point. I believe applying music technology would differentiate the music community in many ways. Differentiate meaning, to recognize what makes something different. This could be applied in many different settings in the music world, for example we could add interments with midi inputs and outputs and add effects to our music teaching our students how to layout a midi interface. We could also apply sound tracks to the back of music and have it run by students like in the Steven Bryant piece Ecstatic Waters, that would teach our students to matching tempo and precision with a sound track. Another example that I always see beneficial in the performance point is when you here an instrument that is unexpected in an ensemble and it would automatically draw the listener in right as we apply the different instrument being a keyboard hooked up to a synthesizer or a guitar with like 3 different peddles and a computer with a midi hookup and filters, the draws listeners in from the start. An innovative idea would be possibly keeping the same exact ensemble and just recording them and building a loop and adding extra things into the recording from just your computer program, that way you still have the original but your adding your own to it as well. When Bauer says "learning is contextual, active, social, and reflective?" he is basically saying that we can learn in more then one way at a time, for example the twitter assignment I have been doing covers all those categories I believe, as apposed to sitting in my room not communication and reading from a book and writing a paper next class and all I end up learning is how to wright a paper in under an hour. Like Bauer also says technology is a means by which music teachers can differentiate instruction, providing different paths for students to achieve learning outcomes. I like this one because it goes along well with a tweet I saw from my twitter assignments, and he says basically the exact same thing I said in my response, I believe that creating multiple objectives so every student experiences something new and develops themselves and provides opportunity to learn something and also maybe even teach something to the rest of the students that would not know about the project or assignment we may be doing. After reading this chapter I have discovered new ways to aproceh my ideas as a music educator in relation to music and also in relation to technology, I have learned a powerful process in how to aproceh an assignment as a teacher and I have been enlightened on my many number of possibilities and theories on learning with music technology. Tweet One: Do we have all the resources available to our students in schools today to achieve the best of their abilities in the arts? #JMUmustech
Tweet Two: Janelle Harris@janmhar20#JMUmustech Do you feel you appreciate music through digital or traditional ways? Which way would you personally prefer how to learn music? Tweet three: Katy Morgan@katymo618What are ways to vary teaching methods in order to provide an effective & nurturing environment? #JMUmustech Above I have labeled some tweets that had me think a little bit when I was reading them or even reading the comments, I found that some students feel very strongly about their opinion when it comes to the arts and the path of learning we should take. I am now going to talk a little bit individually about each tweet. The first tweet is actually mine and what I took from this is how opinionated we all are about the same subject. We all believe that music is not funded enough but we all had different ideas like for example a classmate of mine (Jacob Reeves) said that the funding is not their simply because the priorities of the school board are leaning more towards sports and athletics. Another example of a truly different opinion is that from a student in another class (Charlie Fries) said he sees similar features in math as to music, does this mean we should treat music as if its a math class? I think we realize our true values of these classes not until we take them and compare them ourselves like Charlie did. That was just two of many responses (probably over 20) on this tweet. I feel we need to learn to value all forms of education being art or gen ed's or physical activity and realize how having a well rounded education of all improves us as teachers and students. The second tweet had me thinking, is I cannot stress how important it is that we appreciate all music as apposed to our own, if we are to call ourselves artist then we must become familiar with all types of our art. Also the term "Traditional can be manipulated in many ways, this meaning could be multiple things, so I see why do we spend so much time labeling music as traditional or retro or digital or whatever the case may be. I believe we should refer to music as a simple term, "music" because the more time we spend trying to separate the types of it the less we realize that its all the same thing at the root of this conversation. What made me come to realize this is when Keith was talking about how traditional means different things to everybody, and then I realized that we could call music by something everybody knows it by, "music". What I feel I need to do is break the barrier between genres to make other people realize that music is music no matter what, I could possibly do this with some mix of genres between songs and some cutting and copying into a program to make some sweet mixtape that included, literally everything. The third tweet talks about making a safe learning enviorment for all students, meaning that the advanced students still have time to grow and improve and were the struggling students have opportunity for help and improve themselves to their own standard. I recommended creating multiple objectives in this process because then it requires every student to try something new. I never really though about this process until it was brought up in this tweet but being a kid with learning disabilities myself, I have always struggled and its nice to have an environment where I can better myself without holding back other students or vise versa. I feel like tweets like this open the eyes of students and it also seemed to cause Adrianne to come up with almost the same exact idea so I'm not alone on this opinion. This whole twitter conversation assignment allowed me to become connected with experts and students from other classes and allowed me to share my opinion and ideas with fellow music majors. I found this extremely beneficial because I got to respond to ideas that I never though of and I got to see my fellow classmates develop their theories and ideas as a comparison to mine and see where I differ on some ideas. Differing isn't a bad thing ether its better to look at this whole process from two different standpoints to ensure your taking in the big objective of whatever you may be doing like in this assignment for example. In some twitter convos I ended up changing my opinion a lot because I got a different view on something I never though of and that was great, I really feel like this assignments helped me develop in a multi opinion based idea and see how to solve problems in more then one way. |
